In the previous lesson, we learned that a project is the first structural layer of your data, followed by experiments and tasks. Here we will tackle both of them since they are closely intertwined – you cannot create a task without creating an experiment first.

Furthermore, you can copy an entire experiment with all tasks included, which can help you replicate various experiments in no time.


The experiment can represent an actual lab experiment (SDS-PAGE, qPCR, antibody purification, CRISPR transformation of plants), a process (separation of biomass, cell disruption, concentration of broth, polishing of metabolites), a cell culture, a batch, a model organism or anything else that comes to mind.

An experiment then contains a sequence of tasks that can represent the main experimental phases (sample preparation, DNA isolation, qPCR run, data analysis), days/weeks/months of an experiment, different antibodies, markers, plates, cell cultures, batches, model organisms, etc.

Each task card includes assigned users, activity, comments, due date and custom tags.

To create an experiment begin with opening a selected project on the main dashboard then click the green button +New Experiment. Write the Experiment name and Description, after that click the green Create button.

A created experiment is displayed as a thumbnail that contains basic information such as name, description, creation date and last modified date.


Once you have an experiment, you can create a final structural layer – a task. A task can be a stand-alone unit or you can create a workflow of multiple connected tasks.

To create the first task, open an experiment and click the green Edit Experiment button. Then click the New task button on the left and drag-and-drop the task card on the blank canvas. After that, type in Task name and click the green Add button. You can add as many task as you wish and move them around the canvas in any direction.

To connect the tasks into a workflow simply drag a connection with your mouse from one task to another. Don’t forget to click the green Save button on the right once you are completely finished with creating the tasks.

For the purpose of time management and prioritization, SciNote allows you to set the due date on individual tasks. Simply click the Due date on the task card, select the date from the calendar and click the green Save button.

Under the Assigned users icon you can add multiple users who are the project members, meaning, they need to be invited to the project first in order to be added on a task. To assign new users to the task click on Manage users link, select a person from a drop-down list and click the green +Add button.

As mentioned in the #2 Lesson: Projects, you can also communicate with your colleagues by using @ – smart annotations. To leave a message to a specific person, click on the Comments icon, and type @ symbol in the comment field. Select a person from a drop-down list, write a message and click the paper plane symbol on the right side of the comment field.

Furthermore, you can easily keep track of a task progress. For example, when you are finished with a certain task, click on its name to open the task overview. Then click the blue Complete Task button on the right. The task status at the top changes to Task completed accompanied with the completion date. This will also be shown on a task card with a green, check marked due date.

Now, what about copying an entire experiment with all the tasks within? You can create an experiment template, in which all the tasks and protocol steps are copied. To do that, click the Copy as template action in the right-upper corner of an experiment thumbnail and select Copy as template from the drop-down menu.

After that you have to select a project, to which you wish to copy the selected experiment. Also, be aware when copying an experiment as a template, the task results and task comments are not included.

In case you wish to only move a specific experiment from one project to another, note that this is possible only between the projects that contain the same (or additional) users.

To move an experiment to another project, select Move from the drop-down menu once clicking the Copy as template action in the right-upper corner of an experiment thumbnail. Then simply select the project to which you want an experiment to be moved. When moving an experiment, the entire content of it is transferred. This includes all tasks and its content, such as protocols, results, activity, comments and tags.


  1. Log into your SciNote Free account or shared SciNote Premium site. that has a unique URL link (i.e. companyname.scinote.net).
  2. Create an experiment and name it (e.g. qPCR).
  3. Open an experiment and create the first task (e.g. Sample preparation).
  4. Create a workflow of multiple tasks.
  5. Set a due date on one of the tasks.
  6. Bonus: Add a person to the task and leave them a message.
