Project Description

3D tissue models in a drug discovery lab

By Dr. Earl Prinsloo, Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Rhodes University Biotechnology Innovation Centre.

Can you tell us a bit more about your work and what do you find most interesting about it?

My laboratory is currently engaged in the investigation of cellular differentiation, cancer-adipose interactions and the development of tools for 3D tissue models in drug discovery.

How did you decide to start using an electronic lab notebook?

The need to centralize optimised laboratory protocols, data and bring consistency to the lab’s notebook format. The loss of critical information due to human error and the misplacing of data in physical formats.

It is important in modernising scientific processes and integrate with the technological era that we find ourselves in. Electronic lab notebooks help with long-term data storage, and accurate time verification due to the timestamps provided.

It allows for a more efficient data collection process, data collection categorisation, and provides accessibility from any destination. Electronic lab notebooks allow for sustainable and continuity of research over the years.

Which were the main reasons that you chose SciNote?

Following evaluation of multiple ELN systems, my students were unanimous in their decision to use SciNote due to user friendliness, clean interface and integration with

How much time did it take you to get familiar with SciNote in the beginning and start using it?

It was quite a learning curve to understand the three-step process in creating projects and experiments, but the hurdle was quickly overcome. It took a week’s worth of playing around with the user interface.

How does SciNote fit into your workdays and where is it most helpful?

Recording lab data is a daily task along with uploading data, protocols and optimisations of protocols. Having an electronic lab notebook allows for quick data capturing, and quick progress tracking.

Which are the benefits of using SciNote i.e. what do you like most about it?

The benefits of SciNote include a clean interface, a user-friendly experience and the ability to integrate data from other platforms.

What is your experience with the SciNote team?

They are quite efficient with regards to follow-ups.

Would you recommend SciNote to other scientists and why?

Yes, we would recommend SciNote to other scientists for the interface, for the user-friendliness and the ability to integrate data from other platforms.

It is a greener form of experimental data and protocol recording.

It supplies an online backup in case of written data loss.

Access to colleague’s data and protocols is made easier using the online platform, allowing for a better laboratory workflow.
